And a voice said to me "I'm going to write about how the wolf became the dog from the wolf's point of view." No one else was in the apartment, so I took the idea and wrote Promise of the Wolves. I was fascinated by the way we consider them part of our families and they consider us part of their packs. I had been wondering about our relationship with dogs. Then the wolves barged in the door and everything changed.

Up until then, I couldn't get past three or four pages of a story. I had been trying to write for about ten years when I got the idea for The Wolf Chronicles. I used to climb the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in my parents' library to get to the science fiction books, and spent much of my childhood making up stories when I was supposed to be doing other things. I fell in love with books not long after. The first wolf in my life was named Happy, a sweet terrier-spaniel mutt with big brown eyes, and we met when we were both about six weeks old.
